What is the difference between LNG and RLNG?

LNG stands for Liquefied Natural Gas, while RLNG stands for Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas. The primary difference between the two lies in their physical states and how they are used.

LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas)

  • LNG is natural gas that has been cooled to -162 degrees Celsius (-260 degrees Fahrenheit), at which point it becomes a liquid.
  • The liquefaction process reduces the volume of natural gas by about 600 times, making it more economical to transport over long distances by ship or tanker trucks.
  • LNG is typically transported from natural gas-rich regions to areas with high demand for energy, where it is regasified and used for various purposes, including electricity generation, heating, and industrial processes.

RLNG (Regasified Liquefied Natural Gas):

  • RLNG is LNG that has been returned to its gaseous state through a process called regasification.
  • When LNG reaches its destination, it is stored in tanks and then pumped through a regasification terminal, where it is heated to return it to its natural gaseous state.
  • Once regasified, RLNG is identical to natural gas extracted directly from gas fields and can be distributed through pipelines for use in homes, businesses, power plants, and other applications.
